Guide to Energy-Efficient Windows: SHGC vs. U-Value

Nowadays, there is a wide range of technologically advanced window options that focus on energy efficiency. This development in the window industry helps homeowners lower heating and cooling costs, and significantly increase comfort. However, choosing which energy-efficient windows suit your needs can be challenging. To help you figure out the best window for your needs, look for the U-value and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) ratings of windows.

U-Value

This measures the rate that the window transfers non-solar heat. Basically, it provides a measurable indication of the window’s insulation quality. The window U-rating is reflected as a number between 0.20 and 1.20. For better insulation in your home, it’s best to choose windows with a lower U-rating.

SHGC

This rating reflects how much solar heat gets inside the home once it permeates the window glass. SHGC ratings are measured between 0 and 1. The lower value means the glass allows less solar heat from entering the home. The SHGC and U-ratings go hand in hand. Windows with higher SHGC ratings have higher U-ratings as well.

Which U-Value and SHGC Ratings Are Best for My Home?

When shopping for new windows, you must consider your personal preferences and local climate. Generally, lower U-values are used to keep the warmth in a room at night or in cold climates. Meanwhile, low SHGC ratings are preferred for areas that receive direct sunlight to reduce the amount of heat that penetrates the window during summer.
