Calgary Home & Garden Show February 23 - 26, 2012

Monday, February 13, 2012

Did you miss seeing us at the January Home Show?  Well, don't worry, because you can come and visit with us at the Calgary Home and Garden show at the BMO Centre on February 23 - 26th.  You will find us at the back of the main hall at booth # 833. We are more than happy to take the time to discuss solutions for the exterior renovation project that you are planning to complete this spring or summer.

If you are preparing to install replacement windows and doors in your home then I would, of course, suggest that you speak with us about what we can offer you in terms of selection, quality and experience. We are in our 21st year of business in Calgary.

Also, keep in mind that we do more than just window and door replacements.  We can refinish the full exterior of your home with Hardie Board siding, stone and stucco.  We also can rebuild decks, build out dormers and complete wood framing additions.   S.I.S. is one of the few contractors in the city that have installation experience with the new Eco-clad (bamboo composite) siding.  Come back to our gallery soon - there will be photos of this very contemporary siding product.

The show hours are as follows:

Thursday, February 23:    Noon - 9:00 p.m.

Friday, February 24:         Noon - 9:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 25:    10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Sunday, February 26:       10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Plan to come and visit us at the show and while you are there, enter our draw to win the supply and install of a Plygem Ambassador PVC window.  See our booth for details!  Have a look at our new "Video Gallery" under the "Media Gallery" tab on the main navigation bar on our website www.sisltd.ca.  The two videos demonstrate the wide project scope that we are capable of completing.

For more information on the show, visit:  www.calgaryhgs.com.

I know that spring and summer seem to be a long way off, but in a blink of an eye, it will be here.  Don't hesitate, call us today and we will share our ideas for your project!  Call 403-640-1334.

Now that the Christmas Holidays are coming to an end and hopefully you have survived New Year's you may want to start thinking about that renovation you began contemplating in 2011.  My suggestion, of course, is that you come to visit us at the Calgary HomExpo at the BMO Centre from Jan 13 - Jan15th.  You will find us in booth #277 at the very front of the show.

  • Attending a local home show shows support for your community and the local businesses in your area;
  • Bring along the family or a friend and make it a fun outing.

So come down and  see us and while you are there enter our draw for the supply and install of a PlyGem Ambassador PVC Window (see our booth for details)!  Remember we have the knowledge and skill to complete any exterior renovation you have in mind.  Replacement windows, stone, stucco, siding (including Hardy Board and Eco Clad - a bamboo composite exterior siding), wood framing, roll shutters, and fabulous doors from Portatec.

Window Condensation

Monday, December 05, 2011

Have you been experiencing condensation problems on your newly installed replacement windows?  Often times, after installing  new replacement windows in a home, customers will contact us wondering why all of a sudden they have condensation build up on their windows?  This is because new replacement windows are airtight and this makes the excess of humidity impossible to escape. Your old windows were probably draughty and these slight cracks allowed the excess of humidity in your home to escape.

We have found that the most common culprit is the humidifier being set too high together with blinds being closed all the way to the bottom and/or curtains drawn.  This combination of events, restricts air from circulating around the window and results in a cooler glass surface which causes condensation to form on the surface of the window itself.

Replacement windows on the other hand are energy efficient windows and do not leak.  There is no draught around them to help the moisture build up on your windows to evaporate.  You therefore need to use other measures to reduce the moisture build up in your home.

See the link below for more information from our window supplier, Plygem, on ways to reduce the moisture in your home.

Government of Alberta - Energy Efficiency Rebates

Monday, August 15, 2011
Did you know that the Government of Alberta also offers an Energy Efficiency Rebate Program?  This program provides even more of an incentive to those of you who may be considering residing and insulating your home before the winter months hit.  (I know, I know - don't say the "w" word).

There are two components to the Provincial Energy Grant.

1.    eEcoEnergy Retrofit Pre and Post Evaluations:

The cost for the Pre Retrofit Evaluation is $300.00 – The Government of Alberta will cover $100.00 of this.
The cost for the Post Retrofit Evaluation is $150.00 - The Government of Alberta will cover $100.00 of this after completion.

This means that the cost of your evaluations drop from $450.00 down to $250.00 after the rebate.

 2.    Exterior Wall Insulation:

The Government of Alberta also offers an Exterior Wall Insulation Grant in conjunction with the Federal ecoEnergy Retrofit Grant.  The Provincial grant matches up to 75% of the Federal Grant.

A person could receive up to $1575.00 using R-3.8 – R-9 insulation covering 80% of the exterior walls between the Federal and Provincial grants.

Once a person applies for the Federal Grant, all of the information is automatically passed onto the Provincial Government and no extra paperwork or filling out forms is necessary.

Once again, don't delay if you are considering a full exterior renovation and planning to have your siding replaced and new insulation added!  This Provincial Grant Program may end at the end of March 2012 - although a date has not be specified at this point.

Contact us at 403-640-1334 for more details or simply click on the orange "Request a Quote" link above and enter your contact details.  In most instances we will contact you the same day.

Please see the attached Government of Alberta Rebate chart for more details:

eco-ENERGY Retrofit - Homes Program

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

Have you been enjoying the summer weather that we have been having these last couple of weeks?  One of the reasons that summer is so enjoyable and looked forward to by the majority of people is the warmth that the summer season brings to us.  S.I.S. can help you lock in the summer warmth into your cold and drafty winter home by re-insulating and siding it and replacing your old and drafty windows and doors.  If you have been thinking about doing a whole home exterior renovation and upgrade, now would be the time!

Did you know that the Government of Canada renewed the eco-ENERGY Retrofit program for Canadian homes as of June 6th? This federal grant program can give you up to $5000.00 back but ends on March 31, 2012.  Procrastinate no longer, contact S.I.S. and ask us all those questions that are swirling around in your head such as:  How long will it take to complete an exterior renovation?  What type of insulation do you recommend when residing a home?  What is the cost difference between vinyl windows and aluminum clad windows?  We are thinking about adding some stone detailings to the exterior, how much would this cost?  We would like to replace our steel door with a wood door that has venting sidelights and is prefinished, is this something that S.I.S. carries?  We are thinking about changing our roof line over the front entrance of our home, is this something that S.I.S. can do for us?

Now is the time to call us or contact us (see the orange "Request a Quote" tab on the navigation bar at the top of this page) and ask one of our Reno Consultants any questions that you may have.  For more information on the eco-ENERGY Retrofit - Homes program and how it can benefit you, please see the link below.

Monday, June 27, 2011
Welcome to the S.I.S. Blog.

This year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary! We decided that one way to mark this special occasion was to start up the S.I.S. Blog!

We are very excited about setting up our blog so that we can keep you informed about new developments in our industry as well as new products and services that S.I.S. will be offering.  We may also use our blog to keep you informed on some of the projects that you may see firsthand in Calgary such as our previous work at the Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.

S.I.S. is a locally owned and operated company.  You may know us as the company that installs windows and doors but our scope of work is much more extensive than this.  We have the knowledge, experience and skilled personnel to complete extensive full sized exterior renovations and additions. From one window in a single family home to complete exteriors on multi-family condominiums and apartment buildings, no renovation is too small or too large for our expertise and superior workmanship.

Check back often for industry and product news and tips to make your renovation plans go smoothly!
